A Moment With | Lauren Roe

Lauren Roe started her bed linen business, I Love Linen, in 2013, around about the same time she was expecting her first child. What started out to be a sideline project has blossomed and grown into a fully fledged full-time business. Lauren's bedding destination specialises in French Flax linen and has slowly evolved throughout the years to also include towels, loungewear, homeware and kitchen accessories, and much more.

Hi Lauren, tell us about when the idea was first sparked to start your business I Love LinenI come from a family of retailers, and while I shied away from that path earlier on to live and work overseas and in Australia in creative marketing roles, I was always drawn to beautiful interiors. It was when I had my daughter Olive that I decided to use my ‘down time’ on maternity leave to start my own online store to stock well-made basics, beautiful essentials and ultimately my own line of hotel bedding, which is now stocked in some beautiful places around Australia.

What’s the best thing about what you do? Getting to work with amazing people and beautiful textiles everyday! I also have much more freedom to travel for work and inspiration trips, which is incredible.

What inspires you the most? My travels – I always try to take 3 to 4 trips a year and that’s when I get a real chance to reflect on styles I love and have my mind opened to new ideas and design ideas. I am off to Japan again next month and have a few meetings planned as well as textile and pottery destinations on my itinerary.

What work ethic do you most admire in people? Honesty and reliability.

“You want to surround yourself with people who, if they say they’re going to do something, you know they’re going to do it - and do it well.”

What is it about linen that is so special for you? The texture and the drape gets me every time. I never get tired of styling beds. Every colour combination always looks beautiful.

Your greatest passion? Travel – I live to travel. I always have, ever since I was young... I'm always dreaming up new holiday ideas every week. On the agenda is several months away in Europe next year and then a trip to India with one of my best friends.

How do you switch off? I happen to live in one of the most beautiful parts of Australia (well, I think so!) in the lush hinterland on the New South Wales and Queensland border. Getting home every day to a 360 degree view of the bush is so relaxing, I also do weekly yoga and acupuncture.

What are you loving at the moment? My subscription to Heyward Hill books – a surprise in the mail every few months. Anything terracotta – currently re-doing my bathroom and I want terracotta sinks, expanding my veggie garden and learning how to bake bread, my new all gold head to toe Issey Miyake outfit which makes me look a bit ridiculous but I love it all the same! And lastly, taking roadtrips in my new car, a gift to myself, which is an old cream 1981 mercedes with tan leather interior, I call her the 'Cream Dream'!

What are you looking forward to in 2018? Welcoming my second child into the world in April, and taking some time off with the family to travel! Work-wise we have so many amazing new colours and products that are launching too - stay tuned!

Thank you Lauren! | I Love Linen | @ilovelinen
