In Focus | Douglas + Bec's New Zealand Home

When you look at Douglas + Bec owners', Bec and Paul Dowie's home located in rural New Zealand, a few words come to mind - clean, non-fussy, functional and just plain beautiful. This is one of those homes which is truely unique. Built with a design focus showing wonderful restraint, the house is multifaceted and modifiable. To put it simply, its walls move. The bedrooms in the home can adapt from a home to a studio with ease, which is perfect for Bec and her partner, who relish working from home.

The concrete kitchen bench tops were poured by the owners themselves - they chose the stones to go in the concrete, then hand-ground them back to reveal what was underneath.

“During the renovation we lived with very little for a long time, and the experience moving from a big house to a tiny cottage really ended up informing the design of our home. We had a lovely education - we didn’t need a lot. So when we built the house, everything was very simple. The design shows a lot of restraint.”
