The Two of Us | Jacqui Vidal + Alana Langan
Jacqui Vidal and Alana Langan have perfected balancing their close friendship with sharing a thriving business together. The pair have worked together for the last four years at IVY MUSE, creating beautiful botanical wares. Jacqui and Alana have a wonderful partnership, which is built on honestly and positivity. Creatively, they are a perfect match - finishing off each others ideas and quick to admit that work really doesn't feel like work, when you love what you do.
Hi Alana and Jacqui - tell me about how you first met? Alana: Jacqui and I met in our early twenties through a friend of a friend. We hit it off from the outset!
How long have you been working together - when did the journey begin? Jacqui: We’ve known each other for over 14 years now - when we came up with the idea for IVY MUSE in 2012 it just clicked for both of us. At the time, Jacqui was living in an apartment with no outside space and I was living in a rental.
What are your roles at IVY MUSE? Alana: Being such a young business, we like being dynamic and flexible in our roles... which means we do a lot! We both design IVY MUSE wares.
What’s the best part about working with a close friend? Jacqui: Having someone to share the ups and downs with!
Alana: Being able to be completely honest and open with each other.
Alana, what do you admire most about Jacqui? Her unwavering positivity.
Jacqui, what’s one unique quality Alana brings to the partnership? Her ability to create a distinct colour palette that transcends current trends.
What’s the best lesson learnt since you started working together? Jacqui: That work doesn't feel like work when you have a friend by your side to share the big and the small moments with.
Alana: You really can achieve your dreams...
Creatively, what’s one theme you keep returning to at IVY MUSE? Alana: IVY MUSE has always been about encouraging people to get creative with greenery. We are constantly brainstorming ways to make this easy AND aesthetically pleasing!
What’s the most rewarding part of your job? Jacqui: Holding a perfect prototype in your hands and knowing that you nailed it!
Alana: Getting to do a job I absolutely love.
Which task do you each most like to delegate? Jacqui: We both have areas of the business we generally lean to based on past experience and enjoyment we derive from the tasks involved. I find we delegate very little to one another, mainly because our strengths and weaknesses are very distinct. If we can't decide on something, we usually just defer to the person with the most experience in that field, whether it be a more back-end task like inventory management to selecting a new colour palette for an upcoming collection.
What are you loving at the moment? Jacqui: Alana and I are pretty yoga-obsessed. Our Botanical Emporium in Armadale is right next to Happy Melon Studios, so it's hard not to catch the yoga bug! I'm also a bit of a Netflix enthusiast and also enjoy walking my dog, daydreaming and believe it or not steam cleaning my floor!
Alana: My daily yoga practice, dried bananas (they’re so good!) wooly jumpers and Skin Glow tea by Love Tea now winter has officially hit Melbourne.
What’s in store for IVY MUSE in 2017? Alana: We can’t wait to share an exciting printed project in Spring we’ve been working on for a while now! We’ll also be releasing our SS17 collection and a collaboration with a talented local artisan.
