The Two of Us | Emma Henderson + Victoria Beattie
For sisters Emma Henderson and Victoria Beattie, the idea to start up their brand The Beach People was first conceived casually sitting on the beach watching their husbands surf. Fast forward to today and the pair have created a brand which is growing from strength to strength. They share with us the joys of working as a team and why it's so wonderful to share the dream with your sister.
Hi Emma and Victoria, tell about the decision to start the The Beach People together? Victoria: Emma and I were sitting on the beach one day watching our husbands surf and it was very simple.
Emma: Our family was always in business and the ocean is very much in our blood, so The Beach People felt quite natural to us, like it was always going to be.
What’s the best part about working with your sister? Emma: She does my paperwork… ha! She also makes everything super fun. You can say things straight - there’s no pretence with family.
Victoria: She’s incredibly talented and eternally stylish… always has been. We're also always on the same page and know what the other is thinking.
Your round towels have been an absolute hit - did you envisage they would be so successful? Emma: We always loved and believed in our product, but the public reaction took us completely by surprise.
Victoria: I still remember when someone we didn’t know started following us on Instagram, it was such an incredible feeling!
What are each of your roles in the company? Emma: Victoria is more involved in the business side of things, while I am more involved in the creative side.
Victoria: We always run everything past each other - Emma is highly aesthetic and creative while I am more logical.
So far, what's been the most rewarding part about starting the business? Working with my team, seeing others love their work and enjoy the The Beach People journey.
Emma: Seeing people all over the world love and enjoy our product.
Do you think your lifestyle influences your designs? Victoria: Absolutely
Emma, what’s Victoria’s best asset? Her long legs, her energy… she’s got heaps of it!
Victoria, what do you admire most about Emma? She’s an incredible mother and is about 5 years ahead of me on that journey… I pretty much copy how she raises her kids, she’s incredible!
How do you measure success? Emma: A happy home.
Victoria: A happy husband and children.
What are you loving at the moment? Victoria: KitX, Anderson Paak, Chef’s Table, The Mullumbimby Farmers Markets and Bobbie Houston’s book, Stay the Path.
Emma: Magdalena Rose’s cookbook Happy and Whole, The Farm at Byron Bay, Afternoon bike rides with my kids, St Agni Paris Mules and Spell and The Gypsy Collective's latest collection.
