Now in its staggering 35th year, the annual Dulux 2020 Colour Awards celebrates exceptional use of colour in commercial and residential spaces across Australia and New Zealand.

Each and every year, the bar is raised a little higher, and this year is no exception.

Today we share some of our favourite projects from the Residential Interior category. This year’s entries are viewed through a different lens, overcoming the challenges and hurdles during the global pandemic.

‘Undoubtedly, this has contributed to the increased use of biophilia in design, and a resulting swing towards more nurturing tones and natural finishes – the prevalence of concrete, stone and timber, as well as warm metals, paired with warm earthy hues and deep greens and blues, indicates the need for a return to nature and its grounding effect in chaotic times,’ says Andrea Lucena-Orr, Dulux Colour and Communications Manager.

There is also a return to timeless treatments, particularly the ever-stylish pairing of black and white, in both the Australian and New Zealand entries.

‘Reflecting the mood of the time, we’re seeing a trend towards dark cocooning exteriors, with deep greys, charcoals and black contrasted with light, warm interiors, especially in residential projects,’ sys Andrea.

The judges will select Winners and Commendations across the six categories, with all winners (excluding the Student category and New Zealand entrants) eligible for the Australian Grand Prix title and prize of $5,000.

The winner’s announcement of the Dulux Colour Awards will take place at a Gala Event in Melbourne and live streamed to interstate attendees, which will also see the launch of the 2022 Dulux Colour Forecast.

Details of the Gala Event will be announced in the coming months. Watch this space!

We can’t help but view this year’s projects through a slightly different lens... our appreciation of the quality of work is heightened given the challenging climate in which these projects were completed.
