Glebe House, designed by Tribe Studio Architects is a gracious revival of a Victorian bungalow in Sydney’s inner west.
Masterfully enlarging the scope for family living and working from home requirements, the home’s planning factored in a new north-facing courtyard, outdoor dining space and rear studio.
‘Our initial approach was to clear away a series of ad hoc and poorly built additions to the rear of the house that sat at odds with the quality of the original dwelling. This allowed Tribe to continue the logic of the central corridor through the extension and addition, from the front to the back of the site,’ explained Hannah Tribe, Principal, Tribe Studio Architects.
Home to a busy couple with two boys, the home had to be adaptable for their needs, with the inclusion of a secondary dwelling that switches from Airbnb rental and self-contained accomodation for overseas relatives or extended visits.
High on the couple’s wish-list was an active kitchen hub with an island that was long enough for food preparation, casual dining, and also doing homework for the boys.
The main rooms celebrate the Victorian charm of the home, with original decorative mouldings, cornices, architraves and ceiling roses all restored.
The interior features splashes of playful colour throughout - with artwork fuelling the palette and atmosphere. Hues from a favourite Francis Bacon painting are echoed in salmon pink and ice green light poles, the lilac kitchen and in a mustard and mint master bedhead.
Tribe Studio Architects has been honoured with multiple awards and acknowledgement for their sensitive treatment of heritage houses and Glebe House, is no exception.
