It’s no secret that we’re big fans of Ash Holmes’ work. When we heard she was opening an art space with her partner Jake Elliott, we knew it had to be something pretty special. We were right!

Ash and Jake’s new project, HAKE, House of Art, is a new gallery space located in Brookvale, in Sydney. A multidisciplinary creative space, HAKE is a place where art comes to life and is breathed into the community, encouraging connection for artists at any stage their career.

‘Having a gallery was something I used to dream about – I love the idea of working amongst other artists from all walks of life,’ says Ash.

The HAKE aesthetic reflects Japanese notes to recognise their craft culture, focusing on the value in the handmade and appreciation for items ageing well over time: to only make small quantities of handmade items with the intention that they will last a lifetime.

Designed by Ash and Jake, the interior is minimal and clean, the perfect backdrop to showcase upcoming exhibitions, ‘I wanted the space to feel open, minimal and welcoming – our vision is to showcase artworks that people will love for a lifetime, we also want the space to be able to accomodate to photographers and events,’ says Ash.

The first exhibition to be held in the space, Company We Keep, brings together seventeen artists from across the country, reflecting on current times, of separations, and how art has the power to unite viewers and artists.

The show includes work from Jamie Preisz , Lucinda Jones, Phoebe Stone, Amanda Tye, Sadie Whelan, Georgia McFarland and Ash Holmes.

‘The broad array of expression and creativity displayed in a group show gives the audience a taste for so many different styles and techniques in one show. Bringing all these artists together with different approaches and experiences also helps connect artists and provide inspiration for future concepts – I really love the arts community and I feel honoured to have our own little slice of that here,’ says Ash.

100% of Company We Keep’s HAKE commission will go to the Northern Rivers, NSW floods relief.

I love how each day offers new connections with people. I also can’t wait to host some solo shows for other artists, event planning and bringing people together is something I really enjoy.

If we can assist other artists in the progression of their career, I feel that’s an honour in itself to be part of their journey.
