‘Each space is threaded together by the use of Moroccan Glazed breezeblocks that are not only a nod to Southern Mediterranean styling, but also provides a beautiful sense of breeziness throughout the building,’ says DKC Architects. Photo: Brett Boardman

Sitting on the southern end of Yamba’s main beach, The Surf has a breezy Australian-vibe, with its stylish curved exterior, plunge pool and rooftop escape.

Designed by DKC Architects, the team developed Yamba’s first boutique hotel, were they were responsible for the architectural design, interiors and furnishings, thus creating a cohesive and complemented aesthetic throughout each and every space.

The enjoyable experience of The Surf, is that of a relaxed beach-style experience which meets with a sophisticated Mediterranean coastal vibe. ‘We wanted the guest to feel comfortable walking from the beach and through the hotel in barefoot. But also to relish the look and feel of the cool Italian terrazzo underfoot,’ says DKC architects.

Each room was designed carefully to create a sense of spaciousness matched with a real sense of comfort and delight in its natural and warm finishes. Exceptional craftsmanship is seen in the pieces of bespoke timber furniture that scatter these spaces.

Detailed timber joinery paired with weaved fabric creates a warm neutral palette which offset the pale pink and green rooms on either level. These colour themed rooms are complemented by the gradient terrazzo flooring which alters from level to level ranging from deep emerald greens to delicious pinks and sandy tones.

Each room has its own balcony, boasting the luxurious outdoor dining settings and the classic Mediterranean blue and white striped awnings that reinforce the sense of holiday, whilst creating shade and privacy.

The bathroom spaces fuse both luxe and glamour. The sunlight that spills through its windows allow light to reflect off the glass ceramic coloured tiles and enhance the deep colours of the Italian terrazzo.
DKC Architects had a fine focus for detail, selecting soft, natural and tactile furnishings that helps soften the coolness of this terrazzo flooring.

The rooftop level is most definitely the stand-out space, it has expansive north and south views of Yamba’s coast line. ‘Our aim with the rooftop was to create a sense of glamour and relaxed style.  A jewel like tile clad pool is an incredible spot to take in the remarkable views and enjoy a cocktail. Our selection of yellow and white striped sun beds set off the pale blue and white mosaic tiles of the pool,’ says DKC architects.
