‘We love the impact colour can have, it can draw you to an object, but just as easily turn you away. We wanted to demonstrate the versatility of this collection by presenting it in both bold colours and more sedate neutrals,’ says Lucy Grant.

It’s been 14 years since husband and wife duo Adam Brislin and Lucy Grant first embarked on the Beeline Design journey. At the time, the couple had slowly received requests from friends to make small pieces of furniture for their homes and eagerly took up the projects.

Equipped with design knowledge and a passion for handcrafted furniture pieces, what started as a passion project out of their backyard shed, slowly evolved to become Beeline Design—with Adam leaving his role as a cabinet maker for a high-end furniture brand and Lucy closing the chapter on her role as a product developer for a fashion label.

‘At this time, we started to see the potential of Beeline and map out a bit of a plan to grow it into our main focus, it also coincided with a time where I had just given birth to our first child and the company Adam was working for closed down, so while it was a very stressful time, we decided to refocus our energy into creating a business that was going to support our family,’ shares Lucy.

The couple started stocking their pieces in retailers and producing their Calypso Stool for a wide range of hospitality venues. ‘We eventually found ourselves in the position to focus solely on building a brand, and since then we have released several collections and seen our pieces sent all over Australia and the world,’ says Lucy.

Today, the duo work closely together—as a meticulous craftsman, Adam takes care of the workshop, while Lucy looks after creative direction and the business side of the brand. ‘We work well together to balance out each other’s strengths and weaknesses… whilst we design pieces together, Adam leaves the rest of the creative direction in the business to me. Neither of us could do each other’s role so we’re fortunate to be able to have our defined roles and trust each other,’ she says.

Lucy continues, ‘We definitely approach the design process very differently, my background in design has given me a strong focus on the aesthetics and Adam approaches it from a technical standpoint, we will often butt heads on how something should look versus how it can be made, but there’s no better feeling than seeing a piece that you’ve envisioned together coming to life.’

The Beeline Design collections are typically made from sustainably sourced woods, leaning into Adam’s expertise as a timber craftsman. Their latest collection, Geometrica, was inspired by both the Memphis design movement and the Art Deco period—the collection fuses retro-futuristic elements with vibrant colours, geometric shapes, and innovative finishes; including American oak veneer, chrome, natural stones and coloured glass.

‘We love the impact colour can have, it can draw you to an object, but just as easily turn you away. We wanted to demonstrate the versatility of this collection by presenting it in both bold colours and more sedate neutrals,’ Lucy says.

‘My standout piece from the Geometrica collection would have to be our cabinet, it was based on a scribble we did years ago but it sat unresolved for a long time—when we developed the base shape for the Geometrica collection it all suddenly fell into place.’
