The majestic palm which sits in the laneway in Sydney’s Bondi, next to Bismarck House is its namesake. Designed with a sustainable and conceptual approach by Andrew Burges Architects, the home is focused on bringing the outside in, drawing on the coastal geography, the landscape and natural materials. For Andrew and his team, high on the priority list was to preserve and prioritise the outdoor spaces by making the interior connected to the exterior as much as possible. The brief from the owners of the home, Will Dangar of Dangar Barin Smith and his wife Julia, was to design something which had never been done before and to have free reign with experimenting with materials for the design of the home.
The relationship between the exterior and interior of Bismarck House is blurred with a simplistic approach to materials and spatial planning. Muted natural tones and finishes are applied throughout, including concrete flooring, brick feature stairs and textured washed walls - a holistic and inspiring concept which has transformed the former inner-city semi into a bright and modern home.
