Bourne Road Residence was designed to frame the outdoor spaces, stripping the architecture back to its simplest form.

Bourne Road Residence, designed by Studiofour, is a family home which aims to frame the outdoor space with the architecture becoming the backdrop. Located in the leafy suburban of Glen Iris in Melbourne, the home is a feat in simplicity with white rendered planes, focusing on the totality of the site and the value of its connection to the exterior landscape.

Within, the interior spaces are divided into two zones, with the living area and private areas of sleeping and bathing to one side and the adjacent side of the home housing the master bedroom space and ensuite. An internal garden is located within the core of the house, acting as a link between the two areas, which must be passed through to reach either side of the spaces.

The design of Bourne Road Residence is a lesson in simplicity and restraint, with a modest and subdued white palate carried throughout the spaces, which keeps the interior lines clean, while dictating the overall simple and clean aesthetic of the home. While the living areas such as the dining, living and cooking spaces are all completely open and connected to the internal garden, the private living zones are cleverly and purposefully concealed from interior sight lines. Further connections are made between the internal garden and the space around the house, providing a layering of landscape and surrounding built form.

In contrast to the modest and simple facade, on entering the spaces unfold, through private sleeping area and the internal garden, culminating in the main living area.
