Each and every year, the Dulux Colour Awards are a powerful reminder of the role colour plays in enhancing our mood, environment and interiors.
From the exterior of an office building painted purely in forest green to a pastel pink and peach commercial interior, the awards for 2021 are set to inspire.
Out of 437 entries (from both Australia and New Zealand) and 105 finalists, winners and commendations across the award’s seven categories were awarded at a live streamed gala event last week.
‘We are awed by the courage and sophistication of this year’s award winners,’ says Andrea Lucena-Orr, Dulux Colour and Communication Manager. ‘From public works to private homes, the degree of ambition and excellence demonstrates that designers, architects and clients all recognise the integral role of colour in our built environment and its capacity to transform our experience.’.

“We are witnessing new levels of innovation with colour; it is driving design concepts and sparking entire strategies across the spectrum of building typologies, which is a credit to creative professionals.”

22 William by SJB, took out the overall Australian Grand Prix award and also the Commercial & Multi Residential Exterior category. The building’s facade, which is made up of existing brick and perforated screening, features bold forest green, adding interest and a sense of playfulness in its industrial location.
‘Hugely ambitious and brilliantly conceived, we credit SJB for committing to a single colour and so artfully executing its use in such an impactful way,’ said the judges.
Erskine House, designed by Kennedy Nolan, won the Residential Interior for their playful yet sophisticated approach to modernising a Victorian home.
‘The colour decisions (for Erskine House) are more than paint on a wall; it’s an immersive, architectural experience, in which elements such as soft furnishings, landscape materials and lighting are as enmeshed in the whole as the painted surfaces,’ says judge Sarah-Jane Pyke from Arent&Pyke.
Congratulations to all the winners – you’ve given us a much-needed dose of interior inspiration!
