Good Times Pilates eliminates all misconceptions we may have had about what a traditional pilates studio should look and feel like.

The new studio, located in Northcote, brings the same lo-fi, friendly spirit that has made its Fitzroy flagship sister studio, a much-loved community anchor.

‘When I first opened our Fitzroy studio, I was pretty sure there were other people like me who wanted to move their body on their own terms without any of the unnecessary judgement and expectations that come with our ideas of what fitness should look like. But the response has truly been so much bigger than I could ever have imagined,’ says founder Cat Webb.

Forget traditional or minimal, the Good Times Pilates interior has embraced a warm, mid-century inspired backdrop with a mix of bold and playful interior pieces from local designers including Dowel Jones, Nicole Lawrence, Bread With Butter and Mustard Made.

The studio interior features two partitions: a curved wall of glass bricks, letting in dappled natural light, and a circular breeze block-style concrete divider, separating the reformer area from the changing room and lounge space.

‘Our goal was to create a really immersive, fun space that reflects who we are as a brand. We’ve even designed a custom scent called Smells Good, which people can take home as an essential oil or candle,’ says Cat Webb. Photo: Becca Crawford

Everything in here is a little bit cheeky, a little bit weird, a little bit unexpected – it really embodies what Good Times is all about. We want people to step inside and smile.

‘I think what’s resonated most with people is that we put a lot of focus on supporting our community – and that really has become so important over the past two years,’ says Cat Webb. Photo: Becca Crawford

Bright pops of colour can be found throughout the space: soft furnishings in sage green, bright orange and grape purple are offset by soft, ambient light, polished concrete flooring and a lilac reception desk topped with Mortadello Terrazzo concrete, which was built by Cat’s partner Dave Kerr. Alongside the reception desk sits custom powder blue CCSS MakeBelieve lamp, checkerboard plinths from P0ly Designs and recycled plastic planters from Spacebound.

‘Building the space was truly a labour of love: Dave and I pretty much did the entire reno ourselves, from sanding the concrete floor to building the custom benchtops, seating, change rooms and more. The custom outdoor roof in the atrium was built by one of our teachers, who also happens to be a talented carpenter. And the wooden picture frame in the studio was custom-made up in northern NSW – I’ve been dreaming of a frame just like this since a trip to the Sunseeker in Byron Bay last year!’

Similar to the original location, the new studio is running reformer (and only reformer) classes – there are 10 new reformer beds by industry leaders Balanced Body. The classes are designed for people of all ages, abilities and experience levels to suit different moods and needs.

Across both locations – with almost 5000 members – Good Times Pilates promotes an inclusive ethos, providing a space for people to simply enjoy their workout without any judgement. As Cat always dreamed it should be.

‘We’re not just trying to support someone’s physical wellbeing, we’re also trying to create a place that feels emotionally and mentally supportive, too,’ says Cat Webb. Photo: Becca Crawford
