‘Since starting McMullin & co, it has been my dream to eventually have a brick-and-mortar showroom space to display our pieces and to have the luxury to style them in different scenes and settings,’ says Alice McMullin. Photo: Courtesy of McMullin & co

Alice McMullin founded McMullin & co because of her lifelong passion for simple, considered and sustainable design. With a limited selection of carefully curated pieces, Alice eschews trends and mass-production in favour of timeless design that is unique to the individual.

Following the brand’s inception in 2018, McMullin & co is now opening a bricks-and-mortar showroom in Marrickville, Sydney — a milestone that coincides with the launch of their stunning new Simətrē collection. ‘Our showroom in a visual and tangible realisation of our vision for customers to fully be immersed into the McMullin world,’ says Alice. ‘I wanted to create a space where McMullin & co’s online and physical presences can seamlessly collide,’ she adds.

A celebration of visual storytelling and individual style, the collection reimagines form and function with a keen focus on simplicity. Offering a whole-home solution to those seeking a sophisticated aesthetic without compromising on sustainability, Simətrē explores geometric shapes, forms and raw materials, heralding a new design direction for the studio while remaining true to the organic simplicity of past collections.

‘In alliance with our sustainability ethos, it was important to us to make pieces that customers can buy once and buy well,’ muses Alice. ‘We have always wanted to be able to offer a whole-home solution and these larger furniture items like our Etta Sofa and Earl Dining Table have been in the works for a while; the development process was lengthy one because we did not want to compromise on quality,’ she says.

The creation of the Etta Sofa is a key component of the fresh design direction for McMullin & co. Upholstered in heavy weave Dune fabric, as featured on their Beatrix Bedhead and Gus Bench Seat, the calm and neutral profile of the sofa is beautifully classic. Crafted to evoke a gentle interior presence while existing as a statement in itself, the brand’s first foray into large scale seating masterfully achieves a sense of quiet luxury.

‘The Elba Armchair is my personal favourite piece from our current collection,’ says Alice. ‘We chose to combine materials and fabrications that simultaneously juxtapose yet complement each other and I could not be happier with the result.’

McMullin & co’s signature curvatures are reimagined in the Earl range, which features a console, side table, bench seat and dining table that Alice describes as ‘whimsical and romantic, with its angular proportions and familiar teak finish.’ The new design narrative also continues with the Wyatt range, which features angular cut-outs that cast memorable silhouettes, creating a visual texture and unique visual language while remining distinctly organic in form.

‘You can expect to see a fresh look from us in upcoming collections, says Alice. ‘One that challenges the parameters of design while maintaining a look that is unique to our identity.’

As a business, we’re always in constant flow and evolution. Growth only comes with discomfort and change as the catalysts – a very valuable lesson I have come to learn.
