‘Most people who know me, know that I am a tiny bit of a collector! These pieces were all in my storage, waiting to find their new temporary home, collected from my travels around Australia,’ says Lynda Gardener. Photo: Bec Haycraft

It’s little secret that we’re big fans of everything Lynda Gardener put her hand to. The Melbourne-based stylist, decorator, designer, retailer and author, has a knack for creating beautifully curated spaces. Lynda’s latest boutique accommodation location, The Johnston, in Melbournes’ inner-city suburb of Fitzroy, is no exception.

The Johnston sits upstairs an old original 1890s store and is decorated in Lynda’s signature style, a mixing pot of rustic, antique and modern design details, creating the perfectly balanced blend of the old and the new.

‘The interior includes pieces from years of collecting – the walls are filled with beautiful landscapes and portraits and there's a mix of old and new treasured objects throughout,’ shares Lynda.

A self-confessed avid ‘collector’, The Johnston is full of pieces that Lynda has collected over the years from her travels around Australia, from bustling cities to remote little country towns – each piece has a story.

The space itself includes a large studio bedroom and lounge room in one, with high ceilings and windows that face the bustling and energy-filled street. Lynda had taken care of all the details, down to the beautiful linen bedding from CULTIVER and bathing products from Salus in the bathroom, just in case you forgot to pack your own!

‘I love that it’s a rustic old building exterior and simply decorated, retaining all the floorboards and old high ceilings – it’s very raw and simple, nothing over-styled or renovated.’

Located in Fitzroy, The Johnston is moments away from Brunswick Street, Gertrude Street and the city CBD – a short walk to the museum, the parks and Carlton’s, Lygon Street.

‘I love everything about Fitzroy – its diversity, its messy and perfect streetscapes, its graffiti and-non stop all hour bars, cafes and restaurants. Fitzroy is my kind of neighbourhood and has been now for thirty odd years – the neighbourhood includes most of my favourite stores of all time, cafes where I frequent and stores I shop at, year in and year out,’ shares Lynda.

‘I always set out to create a cosy and comfortable space that you want to jump into and soak up – relaxed fluffy cushions, layers and textures always feel very special.’ Photo: Bec Haycraft
