Saardé first began when Shenol and Verity Kizek were living in Istanbul. In awe of the Turkish textiles, artisan-made pieces and the warm lifestyle, the Australian born Verity knew she had to bring a slice of this magic back to her home country.

The company have taken years and various iterations to get to today, developing and designing their goods working with small producers — mainly in Turkey (particularly central Turkey), but also in Tunisia, Morocco and India. But it’s this focus that keeps Saardé honest and authentic.

The brand brings together a relaxed Mediterranean vibe that matches casual Australian coastal living. Their products — from homewares to their signature liquid olive oil soap — invite inspiration from olive groves, azure waters, salty skin and shared sunset feasts.

Sustainability is at the heart of the brand, with consideration on small batches, artisan producers, and individually crafted goods. ‘We design our goods to be textural and make sure, wherever possible, to show the little artisan-made marks and the beautiful character of the material,’ says Verity.

We first started when I was living in Istanbul with my Turkish husband, Shenol and my son Yashar. I found myself totally enthralled with Turkish textiles, artisan-made pieces and also by the beautiful warm way of life we experienced.

Their natural olive oil soap is one of Verity’s favourite products, partnering with a maker, who uses extra virgin olive oil — ‘grown on the Aegean coast of Turkey, where olives have been grown for thousands of years,’ the co-owner adds. ‘The olives are harvested on his sun-drenched farm and made into this particularly moisturising and gentle soap on the same farm. It feels amazing to use!’

Verity also shares the timber Alev Candle Holders holds a special place in her heart, as she wanted to design something simple and sculptural — while revealing the honesty of the timber grain.  ‘I love to put these out at the end of the dinner table to make family dinner or a celebration feel special,’ she shares.

Saardé are currently in the midst of launching their new collection. ‘I am especially excited about our new Cocoon Towels – they have a waffle on one side and a terry woven in two tones on the other side,’ Verity muses. ‘The colours are rich – in charcoal, olive and nutmeg, and they feel luxurious, soft and cosy, perfect for the cooler weather coming up.’

First created as a sanctuary from busy lives, Saardé allows us to return to simplicity — both sustainability and ethically — so we can focus on the essential things in life.

We want people to be able to use our goods to make spaces that feel really good to live in – that feel and look beautiful, and that are made sustainably and ethically,’ says Verity Kizek. Photo: Brigid Arnott

We try to bring a sense of beautiful, natural calm to everything we do. We are particularly inspired by pared-back, earthy Mediterranean spaces that use natural materials and artisan craftsmanship.
