The Design Files Kids Art Awards is back for 2022 – this year the entrants are invited to paint or draw anything that reminds them of home.

‘Over the past two years, many Australian kids have spent so much time at home, and we felt that this year was an opportune time to ask kids to revisit what home means to them,’ says The Design Files editor Lucy Feagins.

The Design Files Kids Art Awards will award prizes to 5 talented young Aussie artists. Young artists aged up to 16 are invited to create an A4-sized, 2-dimensional artwork in any medium, inspired by the theme ‘Home’.

The judges’ line-up includes Australian artists Ken Done, Beci Orpin and Reko Rennie.

The best piece of advice Lucy would give to entrants? ‘The best advice my art teacher in school gave me was to begin by simply taking a moment to imagine how you want your artwork to look, before you put pencil to paper. Take a moment to really think about what you're painting or drawing, and how you want it to look on the page. What colours will you use? What materials? Imagine you’re finished drawing - and then get started, and see where it takes you!’

The competition’s aims extend beyond encouraging creativity; it’s also focused on giving, directly supporting Children’s Ground, a non-for-profit charity working to create lasting and positive changes in First Nations communities, where children experience disadvantage at disproportionate levels - all entry fees of $5 will go to the charity.

Entries open today and close April 24th . The winners will be announced 7 May.

‘We're expecting to see family portraits, home cooked dinners, favourite toys or pets, lush veggie patches and cute cubby houses — the opportunities are endless!’ says The Design Files editor Lucy Feagins of this year’s theme: ‘Home’. We want the Kids Art Awards to champion kids creativity! We also hope this program acts as a vehicle to unite kids across Australia, bringing them together for one massive shared creative project!
