The Pavilion by GSiD

Inspired by the European villas of yesteryear, The Pavilion by GSiD takes shape as an ode to relaxed, alfresco Mediterranean living.

Designed by Adelaide-based architect and designer, Georgie Shepherd, The Pavilion is a retreat for a family away from their main abode. Georgie uses the tonal palette to echo the villas perched along the hills throughout Tuscany — but also mirrors the original home with its monolithic rammed, curved earth wall.

“We wanted this space to be a retreat of sorts away from the main house an oasis of textures and form,” Georgie adds. To do so, the designer channels the Tuscan texture and ambience with a rustic, yet neutral composition — employing classic architectural gestures like cobbled doorways, aged brass knurled door handles, custom-crafted curved timber architrave and subtly detailed oak joinery.

The architecture had a lovely rammed earth curved wall in the central space… The archways were also a nod to Tuscan villas and cobbled entrances which we wanted to recreate.

In a turn away from rustic, the designer invites easy tranquil spaces for the family by introducing a calm, minimalist aesthetic in cool stone floor tiles and soft polished plaster walls right through to the limestone and concrete benchtops. “The brief initially from our client was to create a space that was relaxed and had a rustic, villa-like aesthetic,” Georgie shares. “They didn’t want a sleek modern space they wanted us to interpret the architecture within the interior with a soft textural quality.”

We wanted the interior from the main house to connect with the Pavilion but at the same time to create a calm and neutral palette as a contrast.

The alfresco Mediterranean living is completed with large sliding steel doors which connect the large family’s entertaining space with the landscape. The designer used natural stone to extend, seamlessly, The Pavilion into the pool area — anchoring the new build within its overall garden scape. “I love the overall feeling when you are in the space,” Georgie reflects. “It feels honest and natural providing a sense of rustic luxury and permanence.”

An arched entrance begins the framing of The Pavilion, connecting the Tuscan aesthetic from the first steps, right through to the large entertaining garden. Georgie Shepherd has created not only an ode to the European villas of yesteryear but also classic Australian family living.

My favourite part of the design is the arched entrance and the framed view into the kitchen. It captures the sense of calmness and the tactile qualities of the space.
