Handmade pasta, in-house butchery and carefully prepared charcuterie are at the heart of the Osteria Mucca menu, paying homage to old-world techniques.

Osteria Mucca’s menu was inspired by the rich history of its location as a former butcher shop.

On the (must-order!) dessert menu—cassata: ricotta sponge cake, chocolate and candied fruit.

Osteria Mucca was named in honour of the building originally being a former butcher shop.

Osteria Mucca joins Continental Deli, Flora and Mister Grotto, further solidifying Paisano & Daughters as a culinary hub in Newtown.

The interiors pay homage to the space’s history, preserving its original, well-worn tiles, weathered edges and beautiful imperfections.

A nod to its butcher shop past, Osteria Mucca—'mucca' meaning cow in Italian—is a heartfelt homage to old world Italian cooking and regional flavours, led by head chef Janina Allende.

Osteria Mucca’s menu leans into handmade pasta and house butchery, with charcuterie playing a starring role. Standout plates on the menu include gnudi with brown butter and sage, lamb tartare with rocket and pecorino, veal tongue with salsa verde, and signature house-made sausage. From the grill, the T-bone for two is a hero dish, while pickled vegetables with fava bean purée bring a fresh, vibrant contrast.

The interior stays true to the building’s history, will its beautiful original wall tiles in bottle green and cream preserved—allowing the space’s story to gently unfold in a space that feels grounded, familiar and effortlessly inviting.

The space is rich with considered details, the scalloped tile trim particularly memorable—its form cleverly echoed in the cassata dessert, a standout by award-winning pastry chef Lauren Eldridge. Also on the must-try list of desserts you will find zabaglione with coffee granita and almond biscotti, cassata with ricotta, chocolate and candied fruit, and pistacchio, chocolate and fior di latte housemade gelato.

Rounding out the Paisano & Daughters offering on Australia Street, the soon-to-open Australia Street Suites will bring boutique accommodation to the mix—designed for a true inner west stay, with seamless access to the vibrant dining scene just downstairs. We’re counting down the days!
