Suburban House by Sans-Arc Studio sits alongside Victorian properties in a quiet and leafy street in Adelaide. Contrary to its name, the newly built home is not your typical suburban house.

Like most homes in the suburbs, the house incudes two bedrooms, a garage, a vegetable garden and a home office – but the comparisons stop there.

By applying passive design principles and drawing inspiration from mid-century design, San-Arc Studio has designed a home that is sustainable and will also stand the test of time.

The warm colour scheme throughout the spaces includes the application of wood, brick and tiles, creating a calming living environment.

The design brief called for a few non-negotiable features: ample space for the clients to host large family get-togethers, an office fit for working from home and an extra space in the garage for their 1956 Alfa Romeo! Most importantly, the design includes an open-plan kitchen, living and dining area - a large space where the family can come together.

Besides the call for mid-century elements, the clients craved spaces that were also low maintenance. The distinctly warm and inviting spaces also embody a sense of play, where nothing is too precious to enjoy day-to-day.

Sustainable features such as reverse brick veneer, natural ventilation, and solar panels have been incorporated to ensure the home’s eco-consciousness. Additionally, the dining area leads seamlessly to a spacious courtyard, which can be used for various purposes, such as hosting guests in the sunshine.

Inside, a sliding door integrated into the living room's fixtures creates a partition between the part of the floor plan facing the street and the rest of the living space – a design feature which enables the owners to work from home in a private setting.

Suburban House is a home that has all the typical suburban amenities and much more – a timeless and calming home to be lived in for years to come.
